My Review
Wow.
There’s Someone Inside Your House is the kind of book that just makes you sit back and think “wow” long after you have finished reading. The book is such a thrill ride and it was so much fun, while at the same time keeping me at the edge of my seat from the very first chapter. Stephanie Perkins really knows how to draw in a reader’s attention and keep them turning pages from the very beginning of her books, and she did a splendid job with this in There’s Someone Inside Your House.
“‘Is it true about her throat?’ Alex asked. ‘Three slashes in a smiley face?’
Makani fought the urge to scold her again.
‘Worse,’ Ollie said. ‘There were five deep cuts. The eyes of the smiley were Xs.'”
One by one, students that go to Osborne High School are being killed in horribly violent ways – and it doesn’t matter if they are at home or in school. Once the killer has targeted their next victim, that student is no longer safe. The murders start out with one student being murdered in her home, her throat cut in a terribly dark way – and no one knows who did it. When the killer strikes again and the next student turns up dead, the school is still in shock – and the killer was smart enough not to leave any clues behind. Everyone is in the dark and worrying about whether they will be the killer’s next victim. The students try and piece together who could be behind the murders, especially Makani and Ollie, along with Makani’s friends Alex and Darby.
Because I’m such a horror fan (and I actually really enjoy the grisly scenes in books and movies), this book was such an absolute treat for me! It was a kind of hold-nothing-back kind of writing style and I loved that.
There’s Someone Inside Your House is kind of hard to talk about after reading it if you don’t want to spoil the secret of who the killer is. So I’m going to be pretty secretive about this, because I had a fun time finding out who was the killer in the book. Partial spoiler? I totally didn’t guess correctly – it was someone I never suspected at all, which is why this was such an exciting read!
I liked Makani’s character. She was interesting and had a lot of depth, especially when we learn about her back story, which comes out in the later chapters near the end of the book. She lives with her grandmother and has a lot of issues with both her parents, who still live in Hawaii. Her relationship with Ollie is complex and sweet, and I found myself really liking them as a couple.
While Ollie is a bit of a misfit because of what happened with his parents and who his brother is, he seems absolutely perfect for Makani. Truthfully, I think Ollie is probably my favorite character in the whole book.
There’s also a lot in terms of friendship going on here, which I’m a huge fan of. I love how Makani, Alex, and Darby are very close – I feel like these are the kinds of friendships that we need to have in YA. I do wish that Alex and Darby’s characters had been a bit more fleshed out, but I liked them both just the same!
There’s Someone Inside Your House is a really fun read with plenty of twists that will keep you on your toes. It’s perfect for the fall/Halloween, and would make a great read to cozy up with (if you feel like being scared!). While I haven’t read Anna and the French Kiss or any of the other books by Stephanie Perkins, I thoroughly enjoyed this one and hope to go back and read those, as well.
Not only is There’s Someone Inside Your House full of mystery and thrills, but it’s also full of gore filled scenes that will be sure to keep you guessing. You’ll be completely invested in solving the mystery and loving the delightfully gory parts of the book, especially when you’re truly trying to figure out who the murderer is!
Stephanie Perkins is the New York Times bestselling author of Anna and the French Kiss. She has always worked with books—first as a bookseller, then as a librarian, and now as a novelist. Stephanie lives in the mountains of North Carolina with her husband. Every room of their house is painted a different color of the rainbow.

I agree – this is such a great book for Halloween!
I love mysteries and will have to read this with the family home and lights on!
That’s a good idea – it does have quite a bit of creepiness to it, and it wasn’t something I was going to read while home alone, either!
Great review! I need to read this one! I have yet to find a good horror book!
Have you read anything by Amy Lukavics? She is probably my all time favorite YA horror author!
Dawn Kurtagich is right up there, too!
I’ve seen a lot of negative reviews on this one lately, so I’m glad to hear that you liked it! I’m looking forward to it.

I haven’t read any other reviews on this one because I didn’t want it to get spoiled before I read it, so I’ll have to check them out now that I finished it. I hope that you like it when you read it!
Ooh I love it when the murderer is hard to pin down. I’ve been looking forward to this one, and sounds like it delivers. A perfect read for fall. 🙂

It definitely is! I also like when the murderer is hard to pin down – it makes it much more shocking at the end!
I’m glad to hear you enjoyed this. I had read a few mixed reviews but was still interested in reading it anyway. Now I’m very interested in reading it again since it sounds like such a great Halloween reading. Great review!

Yay! I really hope that you like it when you read it. I didn’t really pay attention to other reviews because I didn’t want to find out who the killer was…some reviewers post spoilers in their reviews without warning. I’ll have to go back and read the reviews now that I know, though!
Ok. I am sold! I have had this on my TBR, but I wasn’t quite sure if I would like it as much as Perkins’ other novels. I love books that have friendship in them as well and while I am not a fan of horror, I think that this one might be something I will enjoy. Thanks for the lovely review! 🙂
Yay! I really hope you like this one. I haven’t read her other novels, but I definitely want to after reading this. It’s more thrilling that downright scary, but it does have the creepy vibe going on!
I have seen a lot of mixed reviews for this, BUT it’s Stephanie Perkins and I cannot resist! Great review!

This was such a lovely review, Kelly! I’m glad to hear you enjoyed this book. I have read Perkins’ YA contemporaries and loved them, so I was naturally curious about this one. I have read a couple of mixed reviews about it so far, but I’m still intrigued to see how she writes horror 🙂

Wonderful Review! I’ve seen mixed reviews of this book but I’m so glad you loved it. I think I should give it a shot. 🙂

Thank you! Now that I’ve finished it I’ve gone back and read some reviews and I see what everyone’s talking about when they say there are some mixed reviews around. I thought it was a pretty good read, but then again I haven’t read anything else by the author so I can’t really compare it to her earlier books. If you read it, I really hope you enjoy it.

I honestly wish that you had spoiled the ending. I’m about a fifth of the way through the book, and I’m definitely going to be finishing it, but I need to know!
Haha sorry to disappoint! I think you’ll be surprised when you get to that part!
