My Review

I have never seen The Devil Wears Prada, nor have I ever watched Sex and the City. As you can probably tell by now, I’m not a huge movie/television buff, and I rarely ever watch it (it also might have to do with the fact that I have two children under the age of seven, but that’s a whole different story). So while the promise of this book being like either The Devil Wears Prada or Sex and the City didn’t really grab my attention, the whole plot for the book did.

Little Black Dresses, Little White Lies is a book about a young girl who lies about her experience on her resume in order to nab a position as an intern at a magazine. She has always wanted to get into the field, and this internship is pretty much her dream come true. She doesn’t want to have to work at the boring old juice bar – instead, she wants to be a blogger for her favorite teen magazine – only when she lies on her resume in order to get the position, she doesn’t realize that it’s going to affect everything that happens from here on out. She has to manage to get to New York (and convince her parents to let her go), and then she has to write the essay that will secure the job – and the only problem is, she doesn’t really have any dating experience, which is the topic of the essay she has to write. So she has to make it up as she goes along (and just flat out make some of it up), so that she can land her dream job and have the perfect summer.

This book isn’t really my usual type of book, but I really enjoyed it. It was different – I really liked Harper’s character, and I found myself hoping that she was able to land the job (even though she had to tell a few little lies in order to get it). The amount of ridiculous and silly things that happened to her in the pursuit of her dream job were amusing and fun, and she seemed a little bit awkward at times, which made her a lot more relatable as a character.

The writing was super easy to get into – I found myself incredibly enjoying the story itself, but the way the author wrote the novel made me feel like I was a part of the book, instead of just the reader. That’s a style that’s hard to come by, and I was really happy with how things went in the novel.

If you’re looking for a great summer read (and who isn’t?) this is a great one to add to your collection. It’s funny, it’s smart, and it’s about a girl who is going after her dream, no matter the consequences!
