Review
I love middle grade reads! Every now and again, I get in this mood where I just want to sit down and read a middle grade book – they are usually so upbeat, fun, and full of magical and quirky elements that make reading fun again. This book definitely keeps up with that idea, as well.
I’ve been in a bit of a reading slump lately, and while I haven’t been reading as much as I normally do, this book made me so excited for the time during the day when I could sit down and read. I loved the plot, I loved the characters, I loved the fun, magical aspects of this book that made me feel like a kid again.
The main character in this book is twelve year old Brine, a young girl who was found completely alone on a rowboat as a child, and who is having the most difficult time remembering her past. As much as she tries, she simply cannot remember where she came from or who she is…other than her name, she’s simply confused about her past. After she was found, she was taken in by a mean old magician and his apprentice, Peter. Peter is slightly annoying and it took me a bit of time to warm up to his character, but it was definitely worth sticking with. Brine and Peter find themselves in a bit of trouble and in order to get away from said trouble without getting caught, they decide to run for it. They find themselves on a pirate ship…and things get all kinds of crazy from there.
The pirates are looking for “The Magical North,” which is a location that is believed to be a myth and not even exist. But for Brine, she doesn’t really have anything holding her back, so she decides to embark on the journey and maybe (hopefully!) she can learn something about her mom and dad, and where it was she came from.
This book is really heartwarming. It adds elements of magic to a story about self discovery, and hey, there are pirates too, so what’s not to fall in love with? If you like middle grade fiction, this is definitely a book you won’t want to miss. It’s funny and touching all at the same time, and the story is downright exciting.
Note: I received an eARC of this book from the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
