Sisters of Shadow and Light

Author: Sara B. Larson

Series: Sisters of Shadow and Light, #1

Publication Date: November 5th, 2019

Publisher: Tor Teen

Synopsis: From the acclaimed author of DEFY, Sara B. Larson, SISTERS OF SHADOW AND LIGHT is a timeless and fantastical tale of sisterly love and powerful magic

“The night my sister was born, the stars died and were reborn in her eyes…”.

Zuhra and Inara have grown up in the Citadel of the Paladins, an abandoned fortress where legendary, magical warriors once lived before disappearing from the world―including their Paladin father the night Inara was born.

On that same night, a massive, magical hedge grew and imprisoned them within the citadel. Inara inherited their father’s Paladin power; her eyes glow blue and she is able to make plants grow at unbelievable rates, but she has been trapped in her own mind because of a “roar” that drowns everything else out―leaving Zuhra virtually alone with their emotionally broken human mother.

For fifteen years they have lived, trapped in the citadel, with little contact from the outside world…until the day a stranger passes through the hedge, and everything changes.

I have to confess that I haven’t read the Defy series. I own the three books in the series, but I haven’t had the chance to get around to actually reading them yet. I have, however, read Dark Breaks the Dawn, and found it to be such a beautiful re-imagining and I loved it so much I actually bought the book and read it a few more times since then, because it was just so good.

So when I saw that the author was coming out with Sisters of Shadow and Light, I couldn’t wait to pick this one up and read it. It sounded so good, and I knew that it was going to be amazing, especially after reading Dark Breaks the Dawn. I wasn’t disappointed.

The world building in this book was probably some of the best I’ve come across in a fantasy book. It was just…so easily to be captured by in, drawn into the story, and fall in love with reading the book. It really made me feel like I was a part of the story. I was able to picture the setting in extreme detail, which is what I was hoping for. World building is definitely one of my favorite aspects of a fantasy novels, so I was really looking forward to seeing how well it was done in this book, and wow!

The characters in the book were pretty well written. One or two of them fell just a tiny bit flat, but the main characters were pretty fleshed out so I was really happy with that. Coupled with the world building, this book is pretty descriptive, and I really love that. More detail isn’t always better, but I believe that the author has found the special spot between too little and too much to make it just perfect.

I’m so glad that this book is a part of series, now!  I didn’t realize it at first but I’m so glad, because that ending was amazing and it made me realllllly look forward to book number two.

Note: I received an eARC of this book from the publisher via Edelweiss in exchange for an honest review. Thank you!

Her husband claims she should have a degree in “the art of multitasking.” When she’s not mothering or writing, you can often find her at the gym repenting for her sugar addiction.
