Beyond the Black Door
Author: A.M. Strickland
Publication Date: October 29th, 2019
Synopsis: Kamai was warned never to open the black door, but she didn’t listen …
Everyone has a soul. Some are beautiful gardens, others are frightening dungeons. Soulwalkers―like Kamai and her mother―can journey into other people’s souls while they sleep.
But no matter where Kamai visits, she sees the black door. It follows her into every soul, and her mother has told her to never, ever open it.
When Kamai touches the door, it is warm and beating, like it has a pulse. When she puts her ear to it, she hears her own name whispered from the other side. And when tragedy strikes, Kamai does the unthinkable: she opens the door.
A.M. Strickland’s imaginative dark fantasy features court intrigue and romance, a main character coming to terms with her asexuality, and twists and turns as a seductive mystery unfolds that endangers not just Kamai’s own soul, but the entire kingdom …
I was absolutely not expecting to fall in love with this book as hardcore as I did.
This book was perfect for a hot cup of tea, pajamas, and an afternoon on the couch. Seriously, once you start reading this, you aren’t going to want to put it down, so make sure you carve out a few hours so you can finish it in one sitting.
I may or may not have done that…no judging!
The writing was beautiful and detailed, and the plot just flowed so perfectly. I mean, from the synopsis I had a feeling I was going to like this book, but I didn’t expect to enjoy it as much as I did. Wow. It was just…it was incredible.
First of all, this cover is gorgeous. I absolutely adore the whole color scheme going on, and the keyhole in the door and everything – it’s stunning. This is the kind of cover I would love to have a poster of just to hang on the wall!
Next, let me say how awesome the writing is in this book. I haven’t read anything else that this author has written, but I fell in love with this right off the bat. There was no dreaded “Okay, let me get used to this writing and story” period like there is with a lot of books – I was drawn into this immediately from the very first paragraph.
The characters are so developed, and they continue developing over time. There is nothing flat about them. They learn and they grow and they experience things that change them, just like in real life. That, to me, is always the sign of a talented author.
When you mix the well developed characters with amazing plot and the fantasy elements of this book, you get an absolutely addicting read. This was the case with Beyond the Black Door. It was the kind of book that was really addicting – I started reading it and just couldn’t stop.
I loved this book so much that I will be purchasing a finished copy for my own bookshelf. I can’t wait to read it again.
Note: I received an eARC of this book from the publisher in exchange for an honest review. Thank you!
