Synopsis: I was one of five. The five girls Kyle texted that day. The girls it could have been. Only Jamie–beautiful, saintly Jamie–was kind enough to respond. And it got her killed.
On the eve of Kyle’s sentencing a year after Jamie’s death, all the other “chosen ones” are coping in various ways. But our tenacious narrator is full of anger, stuck somewhere between the horrifying past and the unknown future as she tries to piece together why she gets to live, while Jamie is dead.
Now she finds herself drawn to Charlie, Jamie’s boyfriend–knowing all the while that their relationship will always be haunted by what-ifs and why-nots. Is hope possible in the face of such violence? Is forgiveness? How do you go on living when you know it could have been you instead?
I heard about this book, and the first thing I thought was “Yay! another thriller!” I love thrillers so much, and this is the perfect time of the year to get completely lost in one. How She Died, How I Lived was the perfect one for a cool fall day, too!
The title and the cover are amazing and have a great spooky feeling to them. The candles and the fact that the title indicates that someone dies in the book make it seem super thrilling – and I wasn’t let down – it really was!
I loved the characters and the way that the author wrote them! I found them to be incredibly interesting and full of personality. They were not dull or flat like some characters in thrillers…sometimes the plot ends up getting all the attention and the characters don’t receive as much as they should, which is a real bummer. But in this case, the plot and the characters both got plenty of attention and were amazing to read!
While I’m not always a fan of so many key characters in a book, this one does it well. It wasn’t confusing or overwhelming as it can sometimes be when there are a lot of characters involved. The five girls in this book all had unique personalities and it was really easy to remember them and tell them apart.
The plot of this? Amazing. There was so much going on and my interest was kept for the entire time I was reading the book. I read this book at night before going to sleep, and it was the first thing I did the next morning when I woke up. I just absolutely loved it and couldn’t put it down, it had so much to offer and it was one of the most exciting thrillers that I’ve read so far in 2018!
Note: I received a copy of this book from the publisher in exchange for an honest review. Thank you!
