Synopsis

Amber Knight’s What I Tell Myself is a light-hearted, rambly peek into the lives of two teenagers, who despite meeting under not-so-great circumstances, end up becoming inseparable.

Meet Annabella and Cameron. One is noisy, one is not. One loves asking questions about things that the other wants to keep secret. And one can’t help but fall for the other.

When a new girl shows up at school, Cameron avoids her like he does everyone else. But the new girl has other plans. Plans that involve finding out who the real Cameron White is.

The only question is: will he let her?

My Review

I don’t typically read a lot of novellas or short stories because I enjoy getting attached to the characters in books and sticking with them for a longer period of time than about 30-50 pages.  But I thought this sounded cute, and I thought that maybe I should break out of my usual routine and try something different.

I’m pretty glad I did.

This book is a short novella that tells the tale of a secretive, closed off teenager and the girl that falls for him.  He keeps secrets.  She asks too many questions.  He’s not interested in her, but her interest in him could just be enough to change his mind.  Although this is quite short, it has a powerful story behind it, of a young man reluctant to fall in love, and a girl who tries to change his mind and help him feel close to someone.

I wish this had been longer…I would have loved more details and background about the characters, and Amber Knight’s writing flows nicely and is definitely something I would enjoy reading more of.

Note: I received a copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.
