Synopsis

This is Max. Max is very sleepy. It's way past Max's bedtime. Max has drunk his milk. Max has brushed his teeth. Max has cleaned behind his ears. Now Max just needs to say goodnight...

Max is tired and all ready for bed, but when he can't find the moon to say goodnight to, he sets out to find it. But that's not as easy as Max had hoped... Witty and heart-warming, this stylish and beautifully illustrated book is the perfect bedtime read.

My Review

I love picture books.  They’re so much fun, and while I’m all about reading adult and young adult novels, sometimes it’s really nice to sit down and relax while reading a beautifully illustrated story.  Of course, it’s also nice to have two other critics to help review picture books, as my two daughters love reading new books, too.  So as soon as I got this book (a huge thank you to Sourcebooks is in order!), I was thrilled to sit down with my daughters and open this book up.  Needless to say, it was a pure delight from that magical front cover all the way through.

Max is a sleepy little kitty.  He has gotten ready for bed – drinking his milk, brushing his teeth, and saying goodnight to everyone.  However, when he goes to say goodnight to Moon, Moon is nowhere in sight!  So, despite being sleepy, Max sets out into the world to find Moon, determined to say goodnight.  Max says goodnight to a sleeping dog, tall buildings, and even the night as he searches high (and higher!) for his friend Moon.

I haven’t read Ed Vere’s Max, so I didn’t really know what to expect from this book.  While that book might be a great introduction to Max, I don’t see why you would need to read it to enjoy this one.  Do I plan on getting Max to read as well?  You bet!

I’m not sure who enjoyed this story more – my three year old, my six year old, or me.  My oldest daughter asks to read this book every night before bed, and since it is such a cute book about saying goodnight to your loved ones (and everything around you), I am happy to read it.  In return, she spends plenty of time walking around the house at night saying goodnight to random objects, such as blankets, the couch, the table…you get it.  It’s adorable, and I can’t remember the last time a kid’s book has been such a huge hit at our house (and believe me, we go through tons of picture books here).

I love how Max makes his way through the book saying goodnight to everyone.  It’s sweet, and the illustrations are simply charmingWith the huge amount of picture books available to get for your kids (or yourself, if you’re like me and absolutely love kids’ books!), then I have to say that Max at Night is a true gem that deserves to be on any shelf, children and adults alike.
