My Review
Every now and again you come across a heartbreaking story that is also beautiful in just about every way – it makes you laugh, it makes you cry, and it awakens all kinds of feelings in you that make the book a great read.
Come Back to Me by Mila Gray is one of those special books that really knows how to tell a story. When I first picked this book up and started reading, I knew I was in for a treat. The characters in this book are what make it feel real…they’re so well written and developed, and the challenges they face create a story that is raw, gripping, and inviting.
Jessa has had a crush on her older brother Riley’s best friend Kit for a while now. Riley and Kit have been friends for years, and now they are serving in the Marines together. When they come home for four weeks, Jessa and Kit decide that they can’t hide their feelings any longer – and they start out on a relationship that is heartwarming and real. While trying to hide their relationship from Riley, who Jessa is convinced will never approve of (he’s very overprotective of his sister, and since Kit tends to “get around” a bit), and from Jessa’s dad, who hates Kit (for reasons that we don’t quite understand until later in the book). Sneaking around and falling love, Jessa and Kit do everything they can to spend as much time as possible together before Kit has to leave again. When it does come time for Kit to leave again, Jessa tells kit to always come back to her.
After Kit and Riley leave again, things are pretty normal at Jessa’s house, until Kit’s father shows up at the door, and Jessa realizes that either Riley or Kit must have passed away. Terrified to hear the name of who she will be forced to carry on without, her loving brother or the guy who has her heart, this novel is is as heartbreaking as it is sweet.
I want to throw this out there…this book has a lot of sexual content in it…there are a lot of steamy scenes with Jessa and Kit. I’m not used to reading a lot of New Adult novels, so this actually came off as a surprise to me. It didn’t ruin the story or anything, though/
I cried while reading this…especially the last half of the book. I honestly wasn’t sure which way I wanted this one to play out…if I was hoping it was Riley who was okay or if it was Kit who was okay. This book messed with my emotions big time, and made me appreciate those I have in my life even more. The fact that there is a second book in this series is fantastic, and I can’t wait to read it!
