Synopsis: Emmett Atwater isn’t just leaving Detroit; he’s leaving Earth. Why the Babel Corporation recruited him is a mystery, but the number of zeroes on their contract has him boarding their lightship and hoping to return to Earth with enough money to take care of his family.

Before long, Emmett discovers that he is one of ten recruits, all of whom have troubled pasts and are a long way from home. Now each recruit must earn the right to travel down to the planet of Eden—a planet that Babel has kept hidden—where they will mine a substance called Nyxia that has quietly become the most valuable material in the universe.

But Babel’s ship is full of secrets. And Emmett will face the ultimate choice: win the fortune at any cost, or find a way to fight that won’t forever compromise what it means to be human.

Nyxia by Scott Reintgen is one of those books that kind of slipped under my radar somehow, and I didn’t really know about it until the publication date, so I’m a bit behind on checking it out.  However, this book is so well written and so much fun that I’m thrilled to have had the chance to read it.  It was such a great science fiction novel that I couldn’t put it down.

I love the cover – it’s one of the coolest ones that I’ve seen in 2017 so far in terms of being unique and full of really awesome colors.  I’m a huge fan of blue, so it’s cool to see so many blue covers coming out lately.  Plus, with the title and the colorful cover, it’s easy to be curious as to what this book is about and to dive into it.

The characters in this book are really well written.  I loved Emmett’s character from the very beginning of the book, and it’s so refreshing to see how character development really plays a part in this novel.  I had this book read in 2 days, because I was just attached to reading about Emmett and the things that he faces in this book.

That plot was so unique – I’ve read a lot of science fiction/fantasy novels this year, and I have to say that this one added something a little bit special to the mix.  Whether it be the nice descriptions in the world building or the fact that the author really took the time to make the story work perfectly, this book is definitely up there on my list of great books for its genre.

I haven’t read as much like this book as I should have been reading all along, and I kind of feel like this year has been the year of science fiction and fantasy reads for me, so I was all too eager to read it.  For whatever reason, I never really felt drawn into those books as I do now, so I’m super excited for all of the new releases coming out, like this one.

If you’re on the fence about Nyxia, I highly recommend you give it a go!

Note: I received a copy of this book from the publisher via the Blogging for Books program in exchange for an honest review.
