There are no two ways about it — if you want to become a better runner, you’re going to have to work hard. You’re not just going to wake up one day and be a quicker, stronger and more accomplished runner; you’re going to have to devote more hours and more effort than you’ve ever devoted before if you want to cover bigger distances or speed up your run times.

Start off slow


Even if you are planning on becoming a sprinter, you should treat your task of becoming a better runner as if it is a marathon. Start early and give yourself plenty of time to ease yourself into your workout and practice routines. More importantly, start slow and pace yourself. There’s nothing to be gotten from pushing yourself too far on your practice run and subsequently destroying your passion for running in one fell swoop.

Depending on what type of runner you are or plan to become, starting off slow could either entail running shorter distances or running longer distances but going at a slower pace. Whatever route you, in some cases quite literally, take in this instance, just be sure to ease yourself into your routine. Even more importantly still, be sure to be consistent with your routine, as learning how to stick to your schedule religiously will stand you in better stead as you acclimatize to the true rigors of being a runner later on in your venture.


Don’t let injuries hold you back


You put yourself in danger of getting injured every time you go out on a run. Even if you take all the precautions (i.e. warming up before you run and remaining hydrated while you run), you could still face all manner of problems, such as suffering impact injuries and/or pulling your muscles, as you seek to improve your performance. Unfortunately, every time you push yourself just that little bit harder (which is necessary if you want to become a better runner), the likelihood of you suffering an injury becomes even greater.

To be a truly successful runner, however, you can’t let this face hold you back. Accept your injuries and push yourself to overcome them whenever they impact you.
