When I Am Through With You

Author: Stephanie Kuehn

Publication Date: August 1st, 2017

Publisher: Dutton Books for Young Readers

Synopsis: “This isn’t meant to be a confession. Not in any spiritual sense of the word. Yes, I’m in jail at the moment. I imagine I’ll be here for a long time, considering. But I’m not writing this down for absolution and I’m not seeking forgiveness, not even from myself. Because I’m not sorry for what I did to Rose. I’m just not. Not for any of it.”

Ben Gibson is many things, but he’s not sorry and he’s not a liar. He will tell you exactly about what happened on what started as a simple school camping trip in the mountains. About who lived and who died. About who killed and who had the best of intentions. But he’s going to tell you in his own time. Because after what happened on that mountain, time is the one thing he has plenty of.

The first book that I read by Stephanie Kuehn was Complicit, and I really enjoyed that book.  I thought it was a really amazing thriller and it was such an awesome plot twist at the end that completely blew me away in terms of how well it was pulled off.  So when I heard that she was writing another book, you had better believe that I was going to be jumping all over that one!

When I Am Through With You reminded me a lot of Complicit, mostly due to the fact that it was one hell of a fast paced thriller that kept me on the edge of my seat the entire time I was reading it.  This is the kind of book that slowly reveals itself as you read – especially with the plot twists and such, so I’m not going to be going over every detail in this book the way that I usually do when I post reviews.  This is the kind of book that you need to read and uncover the truths on your own, because it is a big deal.  Although I’m sure you can find others openly posting spoilers on Goodreads, I won’t be doing so.

In Stephanie Kuehn’s new novel, we are going to hear a story – a story about what happened on a school camping trip way up in the mountains.  A story about lies, questions, and murder.  And one student has the answers, but he isn’t too eager to divulge them.

Little by little, we learned what happened on that camping trip, complete with the creepy factor that we know Stephanie Kuehn can spin into her stories, as well as twists and turns that you will never see coming.

When it comes to thrillers, the author of this book is incredibly good.  She has such amazing talent for bringing her characters to life right off the page, and that’s not an exception in this book – it’s so good.  I love the characters – they are deep and hiding secrets, and I promise you, the entire time you read this book you are going to be looking for the answers.  But that’s one of the fun parts about this book – there are so many possibilities that you’re going to keep guessing at what happens, and it’s so fantastic.

Along with the excitement and the suspense that you are going to feel while reading this book, you are also going to want it to keep going – when I finished it I was still hoping for more, because I thought it was so enjoyable and I honestly didn’t want it to end.

While the end was a big twist, and it was a bit shocking, I can imagine going back and reading this book again with the knowledge that I have now, and I think it might make things a lot more interesting.  This is definitely going on my list of books to re-read at some point in the future!

If you like thrillers or are a fan of some of the author’s other books, you shouldn’t  hesitate to pick this one up.  It’s an amazing read and it’s incredibly suspenseful, so you’re definitely in for a real treat!

Note: I received a copy of this book from the publisher in exchange for an honest review – Thank you!

I grew up in Berkeley, California, which is a quirky sort of a place with many wonderful bookstores. When I was fifteen, my very first job was working in one of those bookstores. It’s where I would go after school, and I’d read everything that I could. Back then, some of the books that had the greatest impact on my life were young adult novels, and now, as an adult, I’ve found my own passion in writing for teens.

Other passions of mine include mental health advocacy, social justice, and sports of all kinds. When I’m not writing or reading (or studying for graduate school), I’m usually outside running or playing with my family. I currently live in Northern California with my husband, three kids, and our menagerie of pets. Life is loud, joyous, and filled with animal hair.

Oh, and in case you’re wondering, my last name is pronounced keen. I know! I don’t get it either.

  7. I really liked Complicit too!! This author has mastered the types of characters that you don’t quite know if they’re good or bad. I always end up rooting for them, but also feeling like I probably shouldn’t be?? I love the way she messes with my head. Anyway, I’m so happy you enjoyed this book. Thanks for being on the tour!
