To Catch a Cat Thief
Author: Sean Cummings
Publisher: Rebelight Publishing
Summary from Goodreads: Hundreds of cats are missing! Fear not-Penelope Ann Pickersgill and her hippie grandma are on the case. While her friends go to cool camps, twelve-year-old Penelope has to spend the summer with Grandma Bev, who is convinced that cat-eating aliens are beaming the town’s furry friends aboard their mother ship at night. Lights in the sky point to UFO’s, but Penelope is sure there’s a more logical explanation. With a little help from Sherlock Holmes, she and Grandma Bev set out to find the cats. Will they be able to solve the mystery before all the cats in Thornhill disappear?
To Catch a Cat Thief is an adorable, feline-centered middle grade novel. At less than 100 pages, it packs a lot of humor, action, and fun characters into a cute little book that’s sure to get kids of all ages reading.
Poor Penelope is stuck with her hippie grandma, Bev, for entire summer while her lucky parents go on vacation on their second honeymoon. While Penelope loves her grandmother (although she’s not quite as fond as her grandmother’s cat, who attacks her constantly), she can think of tons of better things she could do with her summer, like participate in one of the summer camps that all her friends are going to. Her grandmother is definitely different – painting peace signs on her roof, wearing “hippie clothes,” and cooking with only healthy and natural ingredients – she is such a fun character and brought so much life into this book.
When the neighborhood cats all go missing, Penelope’s grandmother is sure that something suspicious is going on – and she decides they are being abducted by aliens! After all, who else would want to steal every single cat in the neighborhood? So Penelope and her grandmother set off to solve the missing cat mystery. While Penelope didn’t originally want to spend her entire summer with her grandmother, she finds herself being pulled into the mystery and having an interesting summer!
