Story Behind the Cover

When my editor asked if I had any ideas for my cover, I honestly said…nope. I didn’t know how to best portray the type of book I wrote. I didn’t want a big musical cover, because it’s more than just a theatre story. I thought maybe they’d just play with the title a bit. Still, I sent basic descriptions of the characters and some important elements and hoped for the best. And did I get the best. I absolutely adore my cover. It says so much about the story, without being overt aboutit.

Designer Michelle Taomina did an amazing job finding the illustrator, Dmitrriy Pogerelov, and conveying the idea to him. And he made stunning artwork. The picture is very much Penny, with thousands of things going through her mind. The flowers and flamingos, references to her Florida life. The alligator, which is actually part of the story. The glass unicorn from The Glass Menagerie that represents her. I was speechless when I first saw it. I’m so happy they found the perfect cover, and I’m thrilled it represents my book.

Lauren Gibaldi is a public librarian who’s been, among other things, a magazine editor, high school English teacher, bookseller, and circus aerialist (seriously). She has a BA in Literature and Master’s in Library and Information Studies. She lives in Orlando, Florida with her husband and daughter.
