Are there any scenes you had to cut out from the book that you can share with us?
Oh, I have so many deleted scenes. This one is Will and Georgie coming up with a story to tell their families about how they crossed that BFF line. It was fun, because it showed their process and some of their best friend banter, but ultimately, I didn’t need all of this in order to reveal the same information.
Will stands and stretches his arms over his head. He stares out at the water on our little pond, and looks back with a smile. “We were at the lake. You fell in the water, and I saved you.”
I scoff. “I would not need saving.”
Will smiles. “But I’m the hero.”
I wave him off. “No.”
“Fine. You fell in the water and I jumped in to pull you out, but then you just stood up on your own because it’s like three feet deep at the lake.”
“And you screamed because something was biting your toe. Snapping turtle.”
Will scrunches his nose. “I’d lose my toe.”
“So it ended up just being plants,” I add. This making up a love story thing is pretty easy. I could do your job Nicholas Sparks, and not have to kill anyone.
“And you yelled at me for being an idiot—”
“This story is a hit already!”
“—and I just kissed you to shut you up.”
“So, now we’re dating because we’ve secretly had feelings for each other forever and didn’t know the other did,” I say then smile. “They’ll love that part.”
“I can see it now,” Will says. He imitates Sissy, which I can tell because he has her hands out walk down perfectly, and does this weird giggle thing that has me in hysterics. “‘Oh Willard Montgomery I always knew you’d be the one to fall for that little thing next door.’ Gag me. She’s the only one who insists on calling me Willard.”
“It is your name,” I say.
He rolls his eyes. I can’t blame him. I’d hate that name too.
“But we’re taking it slow for now,” Will adds, eyes on me and I nod. “Because we don’t want to jump into anything, we want to be sure because it might could be different.”
“Perfect.”
Then we’re quit, just the sound of the wind through the cattails and some old crickets, and I look back down at my book.
Later, just to be sure our story is iron-clad, I get into the pond. Will takes me home after so I can change.
I know my momma. If we’re going to have a story like this, she’s going to ask for proof so she can frame it and keep it forever. And if I fell into some water then that proof better be wet and smell something awful.
