The Love Interest
Author: Cale Dietrich
Publication Date: May 16th, 2017
Publisher: Feiwel and Friends
Synopsis: There is a secret organization that cultivates teenage spies. The agents are called Love Interests because getting close to people destined for great power means getting valuable secrets.
Caden is a Nice: The boy next door, sculpted to physical perfection. Dylan is a Bad: The brooding, dark-souled guy, and dangerously handsome. The girl they are competing for is important to the organization, and each boy will pursue her. Will she choose a Nice or the Bad?
Both Caden and Dylan are living in the outside world for the first time. They are well-trained and at the top of their games. They have to be – whoever the girl doesn’t choose will die.
What the boys don’t expect are feelings that are outside of their training. Feelings that could kill them both.

What inspired you to write The Love Interest?
Great question! Hmn, the initial idea just sort of came to me. But I was really inspired to write a summer blockbuster type book with a gay hero. I was also sorting out my feelings toward being gay as I was writing it. Both of those things worked in tandem and the end result was The Love Interest.
Who is your favorite character in the Love Interest?
Ahh I couldn’t possibly choose! I love them all, and they all havethings about them that I like. Like: Caden’s voice comes so naturally to me, Dyl’s actions constantly surprised me when writing, and Juliet is incredibly similar tome personality-wise. I could go onabout all of them (I find Kaylee in particular so much fun to write) but I’ll stop here. But yeah, I love them all equally.
How do you avoid distractions while writing?
Not very successfully! I’m not the best person to ask this, I get distracted very easily. I’ve personally found it really helpful to set myself word count goals for a specific day. If I say to myself that I have to write, say, 2,000 words today, generally I’ll stick to it.
If the book were to become a movie, who would you want to play the main characters?
So, I had no idea about this until recently. But some awesome readers have sent me fancasts that I think are amazing. Specifically: Brandon Flynn as Caden, Ross Butler as Dyl, and Emily Bett Rickards as Kaylee. I think all three of these would be amazing! But on the other hand, if I had the power to wave a magic wand and cast anyone, I’d like Caden to be played by a gay actor.
What books are currently on your nightstand?
THE UPSIDE OF UNREQUITED and SPEAK OF ME AS I AM! I’ve read them both already as ARCs, but I loved them both so much that I bought physical copies that I intend to reread ASAP.
