Publisher: Simon Pulse

Pages: 512

Format: Hardcover and Ebook

Synopsis: Stop the Magician.

Steal the book.

Save the future.

In modern day New York, magic is all but extinct. The remaining few who have an affinity for magic—the Mageus—live in the shadows, hiding who they are. Any Mageus who enters Manhattan becomes trapped by the Brink, a dark energy barrier that confines them to the island. Crossing it means losing their power—and often their lives.

Esta is a talented thief, and she’s been raised to steal magical artifacts from the sinister Order that created the Brink. With her innate ability to manipulate time, Esta can pilfer from the past, collecting these artifacts before the Order even realizes she’s there. And all of Esta’s training has been for one final job: traveling back to 1902 to steal an ancient book containing the secrets of the Order—and the Brink—before the Magician can destroy it and doom the Mageus to a hopeless future.

But Old New York is a dangerous world ruled by ruthless gangs and secret societies, a world where the very air crackles with magic. Nothing is as it seems, including the Magician himself. And for Esta to save her future, she may have to betray everyone in the past.

I first discovered Lisa Maxwell’s work last year when I had the chance to read Unhooked It quickly became one of my favorite books of all time.  Lisa Maxwell has such a way with fantasy that will sweep you off your feet and right into the story, so I was so thrilled for the chance to read The Last Magician.  If you have read Unhooked and loved it as much as I did, you are in for a treat with The Last Magician.  If you haven’t read anything else by Lisa Maxwell, this is a great place to start!

At first glance when  I picked up this book, it seemed kind of daunting.  I have anxiety and not much patience, so when I come across a huge book like this, I really tend to get nervous about how long it will take me to finish it.  Honestly though, the story itself is so engaging and entertaining that I managed to just fly right through it – it took me three or four days to finish, but that really isn’t that much considering how long I figured it would take me.  This was that amazing of a book, with such a delightfully fun atmosphere, that I just kept reading.

If you’re a huge fan of magic and stories that focus on them, you’re going to really enjoy this book.  The characters are incredible and really bring the book to life, tossing you into the story like you belong there.  Did I mention that Lisa Maxwell has an amazing talent for weaving magical tales?

Esta has such a great personality and the depth of her character is amazing – it’s rare to come across a character that is so fleshed out and interesting, but Esta’s character is perfect if you like character development and being able to really get to know your main character.  I found that I liked her from the beginning, and while the other characters in the book are also entertaining, she really had my attention.

The Last Magician is such a fun book filled with so many magical elements that you will honestly need to take a break to snap back into reality.  There’s just so much going on that those 500+ pages kind of just fly right by while you’re reading.  The Last Magician really offers up the kind of world that you want to get lost in!

Note: I received an ARC of this book from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.  Thank you!

I have Unhooked coming to me soon which will be my first book by this author. The Last Magician will be fun to read as I love magic and large books to keep the story lasting…like the Harry Potter series was for me. I will have to search for the quiz you mentioned (or am I just blind–I do currently have my eyes dilated from my eye appointment today).

  2. Magic and thievery… sounds good! I’ll have to keep an eye out for this.
