Synopsis: From New York Times and USA Today bestselling author CJ Lyons comes The Color of Lies, a world drenched in color and mystery.
High school senior Ella Cleary has always been good at reading people. Her family has a rare medical condition called synesthesia that scrambles the senses—her Gram Helen sees every sound, and her uncle Joe can literally taste words. Ella’s own synesthesia manifests itself as the ability to see colors that reveal people’s true emotions…until she meets a guy she just can’t read.
Alec is a mystery to Ella, a handsome, enigmatic young journalist who makes her feel normal for the first time in her life. That is, until he reveals the real reason why he sought her out—he wants to learn the truth behind her parents’ deaths, the parents that Ella had always been told died in a fire. Alec turns Ella’s world upside down when he tells her their deaths were definitely not an accident.
After learning her entire life has been a lie, Ella doesn’t know who she can trust or even who she really is. With her adoptive family keeping secrets and the evidence mixing fact and fiction, the only way for Ella to learn the truth about her past is to find a killer.
Perfect for fans of Caroline B. Cooney, Ally Carter, and Jennifer Brown, The Color of Lies blurs the lines between black-and-white facts and the kaleidoscope of reality.
I’ve read only one or two other books that deal with the medical condition synesthesia, which I have always found incredibly fascinating. When I first heard of this book, I was beyond excited to read it, because I was hoping that it would tell a great story that shed the condition in a positive light, and it did – I was really happy with this book and the way it wove the main character’s synesthesia into the story.
The cover is another thing I liked about this book – I thought it was kind of basic but beautifully done, as the colors in the title really reflect on the story. It also kind of made me want to pick up the book more due to its simplicity – sometimes you find a cover that’s just overly designed to the point where it isn’t exactly as eye catching as it could be – this one is perfect, in my opinion.
Anyway, back to the actual story. I love the portrayal of the main character’s synesthesia, and I think that the author did such a wonderful job taking this medical condition and weaving a beautiful story around it. Not just beautiful, but also a bit of a thriller, which is probably why I liked this book so much.
The main character has so much depth and brings a lot to the story – I think this book is really character centered and great for those who love a lot of character development and well built personality into their books. I loved Ella, and the way she fights for the truth, even if it isn’t something that she wants to hear. I also liked Alec, even though he is the one that really turns her world upside down in the book – I think he is a well written and defined character.
The plot is enjoyable, and I think that the way synesthesia is weaved into the story makes it even more interesting. It’s so clear that this was thoroughly researched while reading the book, because the author does a wonderful job of writing about it. She is quite talented!
The thriller aspect of the book is amazing, too – I love twists and turns in books and this one was one that I honestly didn’t see coming, so I’m glad it wasn’t predictable at all.
I definitely recommend this to those who are fans of fast paced reads that have a lot of mystery and a great main character, full of personality. It’s fun and exciting, and you are sure to love it!
Note: I received an ARC of this book from the publisher in exchange for an honest review. Thank you!
