What gave you the idea to write Such a Good Girl?
I started with the idea of blame.  Such a Good Girl grew from there.

Who were your favorite characters in the book and why?
Riley is definitely a favorite.  She’s the main character, and she is  complex and intelligent and fascinating in a way I’ve never had the opportunity to write before.  I also love her friends, Kolbie and Neta, because they are strong and intelligent women.

Were there any unexpected plot twists that occurred while writing the book?
Actually, no – I’m definitely a plotter.  I might write a few pages to get an idea of the voice, but generally I make a really extensive chapter-by-chapter outline before I dive into a book.

What is your writing process like?
Like I said, I’m definitely a plotter.  I believe in mapping out my story carefully and trying to fill in any plot holes before I write a lot of the story because I believe that saves me a lot of time and energy.   I also revise as I go, so when I finish, I actually feel like it’s about the second draft.  Then I go over the manuscript about a million times (rough estimate).

How do you avoid distractions while writing?
Sometimes I don’t!  A lot of times, I put something on in the background, whether it’s music or TV.  I usually try to watch a show I’ve seen before, and the music can’t be anything too catchy.  I don’t want to be around people, though—either they’ll talk to me or I’ll talk to them, and I hate the idea that someone could be looking over my shoulder.  I do my best work when I’m not being self-conscious about it.

What books are currently on your nightstand?
So many!  Some people might even say too many, but I don’t believe in too many books.  My next read, though, is An Ember in the Ashes by Sabaa Tahir.

I totally get that – I could never be that organized, either! I start writing and then just make it up as I go along – I’m terrible at anything organizational!

  5. I like the sounds of this book! I definitely want to read it!
