Synopsis: Jesobel Jones is bold and brash, the daughter of a hand model and a washed-up rock star. Jess sees no need to apologize for her rambling house, her imperfect family, her single status … or her weight. Jess is who she is. She makes her own cupcakes and she eats them, too. No regrets.
That is, until Own Clothes Day rolls around at school. Jess and her friends dedicate the requisite hours of planning to their outfits, their hair and their makeup for the one day they are free from school uniforms. But a wardrobe malfunction leaves Jess with a pair of leggings split open at the worst spot, and a mean girl calling her the one thing that’s never bothered her before: fat.
The encounter shakes Jess’s formerly iron-clad confidence, and she starts to wonder if she’s been just a little too comfortable in her own skin. When the boy of her dreams invites her to a party, she must decide whether to try to fit in for the first time in her life, or remain true to herself — whoever that really is.
Rebel with a Cupcake was exactly what you would expect from the synopsis: fun, fast-paced, and a quick read with a main character that you can’t help but absolutely fall in love with.
Rebel with a Cupcake is the exact kind of book that you need when you are in a rut – the characters, the plot – everything about this makes it an enjoyable read. And underneath all of that is an important message about body image that I believe everyone can learn something from.
Jesobel is the daughter of a has-been rock star – and she is content to be who she is, even if she isn’t perfect. Or thin. She simply is happy, and she doesn’t care who sees her eating those cupcakes she loves to bake.
Until she starts to care, when a wardrobe malfunction leaves her the brunt of a mean girl’s joke at school – the girl calls Jess fat, and of course, it doesn’t sit well with her. She isn’t sure what to believe – herself, with the confidence she has always had and the ability to be who she feels she is, with or without extra weight, or does she change, even if that means no longer being herself?
This book features some issues that are timely and provocative about positive body image. It’s a story about learning to love who you are (or remembering to keep loving yourself, despite what everyone else has to say about it), and to prove that you shouldn’t give in to peer pressure and change who you are to make others happy. It’s important to be happy with your own opinion of yourself.
I loved Jess’s character – she is fun, headstrong, and opinionated, and she doesn’t care what others think for the longest time – and then she goes through the crisis that every teen does at one point or another – actually caring about what others think. I think the author handled the issues in this book in a positive manner, and that this book can help others struggling with self-acceptance and body image issues.
Note: I received an ARC of this book from the publisher in exchange for an honest review. Thank you!
