Where did you come up with the idea for Other Breakable Things
Rowan: Kelley’s wanted me to write something with her for years, and this was what came from that. I wanted to write a boy who’d been sick for most of his life, and told Kelley to come up with a girl for him that would counterbalance him.

Are any of the characters in the book based on people you know in real life?
Rowan: Not really, no.
Kelley: I’m not prone to inserting people into my books that I know. I might take traits from specific people and use those, though.

How good are you at folding paper cranes?
Kelley: I’m decent. I’m not particularly fast, but since writing this book, I’ve been practicing!

Which scene in the book is your favorite?
Kelley: It’s really hard to say without giving things away. I’m partial to the very last scene in the book, as well as the butterfly house.

Which character in the book is your favorite, and why?
Kelley: Evelyn. I love her character arc in the book. I love her loyalty and getting to watch her evolve as a person. As an aside, I also liked Jason, a really minor character toward the end of the book. I feel like he has a story.
Rowan: Luc. I like his sass. Since I created him, it probably makes sense that I’m partial to him.

What books are currently on your nightstand?
Kelley: I’m not big on physical books (I don’t like feeling cluttered), but on my e-reader right now, I have Pintip Dunn’s Forget Tomorrow to read, and I’m in the middle of Tracy Clark’s Chalk Houses.
Rowan: The Bible. (Literally. The Bible is on my nightstand.)

I am really intrigued by the concept of this book. I think that the whole idea of the paper crane folding is so interesting and it is something that I have never heard of before. I love reading responses from author’s about their writing process and the character of Evelyn is one that I am drawn to from that description alone. Thanks for sharing this! 🙂

I’ve always thought that origami was such an amazing thing – I could never fold anything except from those fortune teller things but hey, I really admire the art of it! This books sounds like such a great read, and I love how the characters sound, too. If you read it, I hope you like it!
