Synopsis: When boy meets girl meets alien, the angst of first love gets an extraterrestrial intervention in a tale both outrageously funny and full of heart.
Ten years after Earth sent messages out into deep space, there has been an answer. Music from a distant planet has reached the world’s radios. Are aliens about to invade? No one knows, and almost-eighteen-year-old Derek doesn’t really care, because at a wild end-of-the-world party, Jennifer Novak invited him to play beer pong, and things, well, progressed from there. Derek is in love. Deeply, hopelessly in love. He wants it all — marriage, kids, growing old on a beach in Costa Rica. For him, Jenny is the One. But Jenny has other plans, which may or may not include Derek. So Derek will try anything to win her — even soliciting advice from an alien who shows up in his hometown. This alien may just be the answer to Derek’s problem, but is Derek prepared to risk starting an interstellar war to get his girl? Just how far is he willing to travel to discover the mysteries of the universe — and the enigma of love?
I love science fiction and cute romances, so when I heard about Of Jenny and the Aliens, I was super excited for the chance to read it and share my thoughts with you guys! This was such a cute and thought provoking book, and it made me smile (and laugh) at a lot of different points while I was reading. Truth be told, it’s probably one of the most unique and sweet books that I have read so far in 2017.
Ten years ago the Earth sent out signals into space, and they never received an answer – until now. Now that they have gotten an answer, they are worried – are the visitors going to be nice, invade the Earth and destroy everything, or something even worse? Derek doesn’t really have an opinion on it anymore, because he has been invited to a huge party to celebrate the end of the world. Who invited him? Jennifer. While they are playing party games and talking, Derek realizes that he is completely in love with her, and has no idea how to win her over. All he knows is that he HAS to be with her – he sees himself having this big future with her, and he knows he wants her. But Jenny doesn’t feel the same way. In fact, she has her mind set on other things for her future.
Instead of giving up, Derek decides that he is going to get Jenny one way or another, even if it has to do with him trying to get the help of an alien. But by enlisting the help of the alien, it turns out that he might end up starting something dark – a war between the aliens and the humans. Derek isn’t sure if he is willing to go through such lengths to get the girl of his dreams, but he is determined.
This book sounds just a tiny bit on the stalker-ish side, but in reality, it isn’t. It’s a really cute first love story, only aliens are involved and it makes things even cooler. I though the cover for this book was so fitting, and after reading the book, I love it even more.
The characters in the book were pretty well fleshed out – we learn a lot about Derek and his past and about his personality. I wish there would have been more about Jenny, though – I just wasn’t able to get that much of an opinion as to whether I liked her character or not, but I still thought that Derek and Jenny were a cute match.
If you are looking for a sweet read (with aliens!), this is a great one to pick up. There’s a lot of humor in here that I found to be a pretty nice touch.
Note: I received an ARC of this book from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.
