 Books that are considered horror are some of my favorites – and yet it’s really hard to find YA horror with a gripping plot, characters I actually love reading about, and scenes that kind of make me want to keep the lights on when I go to bed.

While Nightstruck and Night Magic definitely have the awesome story line and characters I enjoy reading about, it wasn’t really all  that terrifying – in fact, I didn’t really get goosebumps even once while reading.  I’m not counting that against the book though – some people might find some of the elements in this one scary, so just because I didn’t really think they were doesn’t mean that they weren’t!

If you have read Nightstruck, the first book in the series, you’re really going to enjoy this one, too.  I read that a while ago when I bought it when it first came out, and it instantly became a favorite – the magic, the setting, and the characters were all elements that I really found myself drawn to an appreciating while reading.

If you did read Nightstruck, Night Magic picks up where all the action and enjoyment left off.  Because when I review sequels I tend not to really talk about the plot due to the fact that a lot of people haven’t read the first book in the series yet, I’m going to give a basic rundown and then talk about the things that I really enjoyed about the book.

Night Magic takes readers back into the city of Philadelphia and into the world of magic and horrors, with all of our favorite characters present.  Remember that scary as hell setting that we were introduced to in the first book?  Yep, that’s back, and has plenty of spine tingling chills for us this time around, too.

The characters are also the same, so if you loved the main character in the first book, you’re going to really enjoy reading about her furthering her adventures in Night Magic.  It’s got a really cool premise and I really found myself loving every chapter, from the very first to the last, like I did in the first book in the series.

There is a lot in terms of character development here, too – the main character, Becket, is completely torn about what happened to her best friend, and it shows during the story.  I love that even though everything is frightening to most of the citizens, who have more or less all bunkered down in their homes in fear or the frightening things going on, has pretty much started to rely on more or less just enjoying herself and living her life to the fullest.

If you read the first book in the series, this is an absolutely essential follow up.  It’s amazing, and it’s a nice treat back into the magical world that Jenna Black has created.
