Synopsis:
Fans of The Rose Society, Graceling, and Six of Crows will thrill to the masterful world-building and fiercely flawed heroine in this heart-pounding follow-up to Julia Vanishes, book two in the Witch’s Child trilogy.
Adventure, murder, romance, intrigue, and betrayal with a 16-year-old heroine that is both fierce and flawed at the same time. Hypable.com
Julia and a mismatched band of revolutionaries, scholars, and thieves have crossed the world searching for a witch. But for all the miles traveled, they are no closer to finding Ko Dan. No closer to undoing the terrible spell he cast that bound an ancient magic to the life of a small child. Casimir wants that magic will happily kill Theo to extract it and every moment they hunt for Ko Dan, Casimir’s assassins are hunting them.
Julia can deal with danger. The thing that truly scares her lies within. Her strange ability to vanish to a place just out of sight has grown: she can now disappear so completely that it’s like stepping into another world. It’s a fiery, hellish world, filled with creatures who seem to recognize her and count her as one of their own.
So . . . is Julia a girl with a monster lurking inside her? Or a monster wearing the disguise of a girl?
If she can use her monstrous power to save Theo, does it matter?
In this riveting second book in the Witch s Child trilogy, Catherine Egan goes deep within the heart of a fierce, defiant girl trying to discover not just who but what she truly is.

Julia’s a wonderful, fully realized heroine. . . . For those readers waiting for the sequel to Marie Lu’s The Rose Society, a well-realized page-turner in the same vein. Kirkus

Julia Defiant is the second book in the Witch’s Child trilogy written by Catherine Egan. I won the first book, Julia Vanishes, in a giveaway when it was first published, and I thought it was a pretty good book – definitely a good start to a series and it was full of action, fun, and great characters that made the book memorable. When I heard that the second book in the series, Julia Defiant, was being released, I was super excited to have the chance to read the book and be on the tour!
The characters in the book are still as amazing as the first time around, and since we get to learn more about them as we go, it makes connecting to them a lot easier, since there is so much character development going on. I honestly think that the characters were my favorite part about the book – you know how I feel about well written characters in a novel, and in this case, I believe that Catherine Egan has done a fantastic job making her characters come alive.
When I first started reading I found that I had to go back and remind myself of what happened at the end of the first book, since it’s been so long since I’ve read it, but honestly, the way that the book is written will quickly spark your memory and have you catching up in no time.
Julia Defiant was a solid second book in the Witch’s Child trilogy, and was definitely a great read. I was surprised how much I found myself enjoying this one, especially since I rarely enjoy the second book in a trilogy as much as I like the first. If you’ve read Julia Vanishes and you’re wondering if this book is a great book like that one, then I can tell you right off the bat that I thought it was pretty great – it had the same writing and elements that made the first one so difficult to put down.
Julia Defiant offers a solid addition to a clever and original story – one that brings magic, power, and self discovery to the table, giving readers a chance to truly escape into this beautifully crafted world.
