I Stop Somewhere

Author: T.E. Carter

Publication Date: February 27, 2018

Publisher: Feiwel & Friends

Synopsis: Ellie Frias disappeared long before she vanished.

Tormented throughout middle school, Ellie begins her freshman year with a new look: she doesn’t need to be popular; she just needs to blend in with the wallpaper.

But when the unthinkable happens, Ellie finds herself trapped after a brutal assault. She wasn’t the first victim, and now she watches it happen again and again. She tries to hold on to her happier memories in order to get past the cold days, waiting for someone to find her.

The problem is, no one searches for a girl they never noticed in the first place.

TE Carter’s stirring and visceral debut not only discusses and dismantles rape culture, but it also reminds us what it is to be human.

This is the kind of book that NEEDS to be read.  It’s screaming to be read, because it is so important that I think everyone should pick up a copy, sit down, and read.

There is so much going on in this book, and it focuses on some really difficult topics that seem to be really hard to discuss today.  Because of that, it really takes a leap and puts itself out there to deliver a raw, emotional story that is sure to show that you won’t be the same after reading.

When I first started reading this book, I wasn’t sure if it was going to be my thing, because it had been a while since I read a really deep, dark contemporary, but wow, I was completely in love with the writing style, the story, and the characters.  I truly wasn’t sure what the best part of this book was out of all three, because the author did such a superb job with writing this book that they all kind of just made it one of the best books I’ve read in such a really long time!

The characters were flawed but beautifully so.  Ellie is forced to deal with something that threatens to tear her apart, and with good reason – what she is forced to deal with is heartbreaking and will hurt to read about.  The fact that she tries so hard to push past it and hold on to who she was and try to be happy regardless is also heartbreaking – there’s something about her that really gets to you and makes you love her character, and it’s so hard to watch her go through these things.

The author really brings assault and rape to light in this book, making it the kind of read that is brutally honest and raw and full of emotion – the kind of book that is important, especially today.  It’s beautifully written and has so much to offer.

Note: I received an ARC of this book from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.  Thank you!

TE Carter was born in New England and has lived in New England for pretty much her entire life. Throughout her career, she’s done a lot of things, although her passion has always been writing. When she’s not writing, she can generally be found reading classic literature, playing Xbox, organizing her comic collection, or binge watching baking competitions. She continues to live in New England with her husband and their two cats.
