Synopsis: Janey King’s priorities used to be clear: track, school, friends, and family. But when seventeen-year-old Janey learns that her seemingly happy parents are getting divorced, her world starts to shift. Back at school, Luke Hallstrom, an adorable senior, pursues Janey, and she realizes that she has two new priorities to consider: love and sex.

Inspired by Judy Blume’s classic Forever, I Never features a perfect, delicious, almost-to-good-to-be-true high school relationship . . . and it doesn’t shy away from the details. Destined to be passed from teen to teen, this is a young adult debut that will get readers talking.

It isn’t too often you come across a book that really brings sexuality into YA, but this is one of those books that I have to admit that I was really curious about because it did just that.  The last time I read a book like this was a while back, so I wasn’t sure what to expect, but I really hoped it would set itself apart from a lot of other YA books by doing just this.

I Never definitely was different in a lot of ways, and it was a nice twist on the usual YA contemporary I tend to find myself curling up with.  It really was entertaining, and I did find myself enjoying it for the most part.  It was different, like I said, and kind of shocking, as a lot of other YA novels tend to skirt around the topic rather than making it the center of the book.  It was interesting.

I found myself liking Janey’s character a lot – she was fun and I thought she really underwent some serious character development – in fact, she changed a lot from the beginning of the novel through to the end.  I’m a huge fan of character development so that really made me happy.  The relationship she had with Luke felt real, and I think the author did a wonderful job writing it.  The emotions that Janey went through during the course of her relationship with Luke was interesting to read, and I do like a good book that brings me tons of emotions and feelings.

The book had a bit of humor to it too, which was actually a nice touch.  I wasn’t sure how I was going to feel about the book being kind of light and funny at parts, but it was and it really worked out well.

Janey’s life feels like what a lot of other kids might be going through – a happy home that more or less just got turned upside down out of nowhere, and then trying to figure out who she is while coming into feelings she never felt before now.  While trying to make sure she understands that about not only herself, but about how Luke feels too, it’s complicated, but at the same time, she feels some new and refreshing things.

I Never is a realistic contemporary that is light-hearted, enjoyable, and a great read for those who are drawn to contemporaries that deal with realistic family and romantic relationships.

Note: I received an ARC of this book from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.  Thank you!
