Synopsis: From New York Times bestselling author Holly Black comes a captivating original novel set between Disney’s Maleficent and Maleficent: Mistress of Evil, in which newly-queened Aurora struggles to be the best leader to both the humans and Fair Folk under her reign; her beau, Prince Phillip, longs to get to know Aurora and her kingdom better; and Maleficent has trouble letting go of the past.
I recently read my first book by Holly Black, and I liked it. It was different from anything else that I’ve read, and I plan on reading more of her books in the future.
I was excited to start Heart of the Moors. Not only was the cover really pretty and well designed, but I also thought that the synopsis definitely sounded right up my alley. I mean, who doesn’t love the whole Sleeping Beauty and Maleficent tales from Disney? I know I sure do. So I was so pumped to pick this up!
This book was seriously everything I wanted from it. It takes place in between the two Maleficent films, so it’s important that you see the first one before reading. I mean I guess you could read and enjoy the book without seeing it, but it makes a lot more sense and is a much better story.
I don’t want to give too many spoilers for this, in case you aren’t familiar with things that happened in Maleficent, so let me just talk about some of my favorite aspects of the book.
The world building is so on par with what you would expect. I’ve noticed that Holly Black does a lot of awesome thing with world building (at least in the book that I read prior to this one), so I was expecting it to be awesome again, and I was pleasantly surprised!
I love how this book is like great for a wide variety of ages. If you like Maleficent or Sleeping Beauty, this book is a great pick, seriously. My two daughters, one aged ten and one aged seven, really loved reading this book with me.
I enjoyed this so much! It was better than I expected and I have to recommend it for any Maleficent fans!
Note: I received a copy of this book from the publisher in exchange for an honest review. Thank you!
