Synopsis: Welcome to Gideon Davorin’s Traveling Sideshow, where necromancy, magical visions, and pyrokinesis are more than just part of the act…

Mara has always longed for a normal life in a normal town where no one has the ability to levitate or predict the future. Instead, she roams from place to place, cleaning the tiger cage while her friends perform supernatural feats every night.

When the struggling sideshow is miraculously offered the money they need if they set up camp in Caudry, Louisiana, Mara meets local-boy Gabe…and a normal life has never been more appealing.

But before long, performers begin disappearing and bodies are found mauled by an invisible beast. Mara realizes that there’s a sinister presence lurking in the town with its sights set on getting rid of the sideshow freeks. In order to unravel the truth before the attacker kills everyone Mara holds dear, she has seven days to take control of a power she didn’t know she was capable of—one that could change her future forever.

My Review

This is one of those books that I read the synopsis to multiple times, and to be honest, for whatever reason, it just kept slipping my mind as to what the book was actually about.  When I actually started reading it, though, I was practically blown away – this book was such a wonderful paranormal fantasy that I just couldn’t put it down!

Let me start off by saying that Amanda Hocking definitely knows how to write a book that is full of brilliant world building, because Freeks was perfectly detailed and such a delight to read.  When you read a book that makes you feel as if you’re actually there with the characters, because the scenery is so well described and the characters are perfectly developed, then you know for a fact that you have found a book that is going to be amazing.  This complex novel was such a delight that it made me forget about reality for a little while while I was reading – it felt like I was really in the book.

And that cover?  Don’t get me started on how gorgeous it is.

I haven’t read a lot of books involving circuses or sideshows – and how often is it that we come across one that has paranormal elements, as well?  If you haven’t read anything like this, prepare to be amazed.  If you have, you’re in for a treat, because this book is full of wonder.

Mara is part of Gideon Davorin’s Traveling Sideshow.  The show isn’t your average run of the mill sideshow, either – no, the people who are a part of this show have special talents – including levitation and necromancy.  The show travels from place to place, and Mara with it, tending to her usual duties of cleaning while her friends are the ones performing.  While Mara wishes she could just settle down in one place and enjoy a nice, quiet life, would she really be ready to just give up the sideshow?

Mara gets a chance at a normal, settled down life, however, when the sideshow is offered a great sum of money to settle down in a small town in Louisiana, and Mara has the ability to make friends and settle into one place for the very first time.  Mara even meets a boy, Gabe, and develops feelings for him, thinking that it will be just fine, because they are staying in one place instead of getting up and leaving it all behind.

But things don’t stay golden for long in Mara’s world, because soon performers of the sideshow are turning up murdered or going missing, and when they are found, it seems as though they have been mauled by some kind of huge animal.  Someone or something wants to get rid of the sideshow performers, and Mara has a limited time to find out who or what it is that’s threatening the lives of everyone she knows.

Mara’s character was just so easy to relate to.  She doesn’t try to be this “special snowflake” like character or anything, but instead is down to earth, and definitely someone I would want to be friends with.

The best part about Freeks is Amanda Hocking’s ability to weave a captivating story and add the perfect magical touches of detail to every page.  It’s something that will keep you on your toes and engrossed in the story throughout the whole time you’re reading it.
