Synopsis:Orion is a Subpar, expected to mine the tunnels of Outpost Five, near the deadly flash curtain. For generations, her people have chased cirium — the only element that can shield humanity from the curtain’s radioactive particles.
She and her caving partner, Dram work the most treacherous tunnel, fighting past flash bats and tunnel gulls, in hopes of mining enough cirium to earn their way into the protected city. But when newcomers arrive at Outpost Five, Orion uncovers disturbing revelations that make her question everything she thought she knew about life on both sides of the cirium shield. As conditions at the outpost grow increasingly dangerous, it’ s up to Orion to forge a way past the flashfall, beyond all boundaries, beyond the world as she knows it.

Book Trailer:
My Review
Flashfall really lived up to the hype and awesome synopsis surrounding the book. Along with that stunning cover, and that trailer (have you seen it? It’s amazing!), this book really was one of the more interesting science fiction/dystopian novels that I’ve read in a while. Granted, I had more or less given up on the whole dystopian novel genre, since so many of the books just felt like repeats, but this changed the game up a bit – it was fantastic!
The characters in this book are so incredibly relateable – I found myself asking what I would do if I were in their shoes (and no, it wasn’t jump on the insta-love bandwagon, and I’m glad there’s none of this in the book, either), and how I would handle certain situations if I were there with them. Orion and Dram are incredibly brave, unique characters that are well written and have multiple aspects to their personality – no dull or flat characters here!
The whole idea of the deadly flash curtain and the Subpar folks having to mine near them is kind of frightening, as well – the whole idea behind this is incredible…it’s really one of those books that you just have to read if you enjoy science fiction and dystopian novels. It’s full of action and a lot of enjoyable moments between Orion and Dram that make the whole book worth reading. I love my books packed with action (I’m not typically one for a slow paced book), so I was really pleased with this one – I seriously couldn’t put it down until I had finished it (so I walked around reading and bumping into things all day).
This is definitely a book about questioning what you’ve been taught to believe your whole life, and standing up for what you know is right.
Note: I received an ARC of this book from the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
