Synopsis: In this third installment in the #1 bestselling Stalking Jack the Ripper series, a luxurious ocean liner becomes a floating prison of scandal, madness, and horror when passengers are murdered one by one…with nowhere to run from the killer. .
Audrey Rose Wadsworth and her partner-in-crime-investigation, Thomas Cresswell, are en route to New York to help solve another blood-soaked mystery. Embarking on a week-long voyage across the Atlantic on the opulent RMS Etruria, they’re delighted to discover a traveling troupe of circus performers, fortune tellers, and a certain charismatic young escape artist entertaining the first-class passengers nightly.
But then, privileged young women begin to go missing without explanation, and a series of brutal slayings shocks the entire ship. The strange and disturbing influence of the Moonlight Carnival pervades the decks as the murders grow ever more freakish, with nowhere to escape except the unforgiving sea. It’s up to Audrey Rose and Thomas to piece together the gruesome investigation as even more passengers die before reaching their destination. But with clues to the next victim pointing to someone she loves, can Audrey Rose unravel the mystery before the killer’s horrifying finale?
This book is such a great installment in the Stalking Jack the Ripper series. It has everything that the previous two books had – Gothic settings, exciting plots, amazing characters – everything you could ask for in a book like this.
The cover for this book is the most beautiful of all the three, in my opinion. I absolutely love the blue and the ship on the cover – it really catches the eye. The designer of the covers in this series are amazing – they are such well done covers and have a really awesome theme going.
The characters in this book, like the previous ones, are so well written you will almost swear you are right there with them. The dialogue in Escaping from Houdini is incredibly well done and makes the conversations flow like magic; there is something really special about the way the author can spin together a tale and a conversation. I really like when a lot of extra care is taken to really make a book feel that way.
It was so much fun getting to jump back into action with Audrey-Rose – I love her character so much and the way that she solves mysteries is fantastic and makes it so much fun. I’m thrilled that she is written just as well (if not better) in this book like she is in the previous books – it made jumping back into another mystery with her feel like you’re back at home.
The way the author describes the settings in detail in her books really brings them to life – this one included. There was so much going on and so much happening, but it was all explained well and really brought the book to life and made it stand out in the series.
When I started reading this, I was in the middle of a reading slump, but this brought me right out of it. It was so fast paced and intense, and I was on the edge of my seat the entire time I was reading it. I absolutely loved how awesome the book was, how thrilling, and how full of mystery it was.
I definitely love the entire Stalking Jack the Ripper series, and I find that the books are so great for when you need a nice little burst of excitement and thrill in your reading routine. I loved the latest installment, Escaping from Houdini!
Note: I received an ARC of this book from the publisher in exchange for an honest review. Thank you!
Kerri Maniscalco grew up in a semi-haunted house outside NYC where her fascination with gothic settings began. In her spare time she reads everything she can get her hands on, cooks all kinds of food with her family and friends, and drinks entirely too much tea while discussing life’s finer points with her cats.
Her first novel in this series, Stalking Jack the Ripper, debuted at #1 on the New York Times bestseller list. It incorporates her love of forensic science and unsolved history.
Prize: One ARC of Escaping From Houdini by Kerri Maniscalco (USA only)
