Review
stars - 3.5

Darkest Dawn by Katlyn Duncan is an interesting book with a plot that’s definitely gripping.  It was a great page-turner that I didn’t want to put down until I had finished it!

The story starts off with Sloane receiving a not to travel to Willows Lake with the promise that the sender can tell her something about her mother’s death.  Because she lives with her father and she misses her mother, she decides to tell her father a lie and travel to Willows Lake.  When she sits down at the diner to grab some food while she waits for the person who sent her the note, she meets a boy who tries to kiss her and calls her “Bri.”  Confused as to what is going on, she runs out of the diner and back to the motel she’s staying at.

The next day, Sloane goes to Willows Lake high school to try and get to the bottom of things, and there she comes across a girl that look exactly like her.  Confused, the two girls begin to work together to unravel secrets and discover who, and what they are.

I didn’t really have any problems with this book, and I pretty much enjoyed it, but toward the end of the book I did have to reread certain sections to figure out what was going on.  The whole novel was pretty fast paced, but the ending just flew by, and at times it was a bit confusing (especially because it didn’t seem like it had anything to do with the story…I didn’t expect the weird twists that happened, and while they were kind of strange, at least all the pieces fit, so there was that!).

I guess I kind of thought that this one was going to go for a weird long lost twin type thing, and I was convinced that was what was going on through the whole book.  Without giving away any spoilers, I can say that the second half of this book is something that you won’t see coming.  I was beyond surprised, and while I didn’t realize this book was going to be part of a series (for the most part, things were kind of wrapped up), when I read it, I really look forward to the next book now.

Note: I received a copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.
