Synopsis: When fifteen-year-old Chloe mysteriously disappears, the rumors at Grammaire Hall point to murder, but spiritual entrapment isn’t the same as dead. In a library that’s believed to be nothing more than a myth, Chloe’s spirit is separated from her body after witnessing another student’s murder. Try as she may she can’t remember what happened to her before she woke up as a spirit in the campus graveyard. As Chloe uncovers clues leading to the mythical library’s location and her body, a secret the Magical Parliament doesn’t want to get out, starts to unravel. Rogue sorcerers have infiltrated the school, intent on reinstating the Third Edict, and sorcery students are dying because of it. Destroyed long ago for horrific crimes against humanity, the return of the Third Edict would spell disaster for both magical and magicless societies. To prevent her own demise and the fulfillment of the Third Edict’s return, Chloe must find a way to reunite body and soul without giving the rogue sorcerers the weapon they need to succeed, a weapon only Chloe can activate.
Excerpt #2- Chapter 3- (333 words)
I watched as Sophie walked around the room trying to figure out why I’d disappeared. To my mind the answer was clear. Apparently, there was something about daylight which made me visually undetectable. After all, I was still standing exactly where I’d been when it was just the low glow of the fire illuminating the room. I knew it wouldn’t take Sophie long to figure it out, or at the very least that’s what I was hoping. Sophie was smart in a way that scared me sometimes. Rather than continuing to stand in the middle of the room, I decided to go back into the hall. I figured it might make me visible again. It was shrouded in shadows, and what light was there was dim. Maybe Sophie would happen to look in my direction and see me standing there.
Sophie paced around the general area where I’d stood before, verbally wracking her brain trying to think of a reason why I’d disappeared, but still, she came up empty-handed. It was clear that the frustration of the situation had gripped Sophie as she paced back and forth. She stopped and peered into the flames of the fireplace on the opposite side of the same wall from the door. Every bedchamber
in the tower had one to ward off the cold that was prone to penetrate the stone walls during the winter months.
“Devon would know what to do! He knows all about ghosts, spirits, or whatever,” Sophie said into the room.
I got the feeling she knew I was still in the area. She hurried to the door and screamed in alarm when she ran through it and saw me standing there in the dim light. I couldn’t help it. I bent over I was laughing so hard. I knew she couldn’t hear the rolling sound, but man, if she could have seen her face! The wry twist of her lips told me she didn’t appreciate me getting my giggles at her expense.
