By Any Means Necessary
Author: Candice Montgomery
Publication Date: October 8th, 2019
Publisher: Page Street Kids
Synopsis: An honest reflection on cultural identify, class, and gentrification. Fans of Nic Stone and Elizabeth Acevedo will eagerly anticipate Torrey.
On the day Torrey officially becomes a college freshman, he gets a call that might force him to drop out before he’s even made it through orientation: the bee farm his beloved uncle Miles left him after his tragic death is being foreclosed on.
Torrey would love nothing more than to leave behind the family and neighborhood that’s bleeding him dry. But he still feels compelled to care for the project of his uncle’s heart. As the farm heads for auction, Torrey precariously balances choosing a major and texting Gabriel—the first boy he ever kissed—with the fight to stop his uncle’s legacy from being demolished. But as notice letters pile up and lawyers appear at his dorm, dividing himself between family and future becomes impossible unless he sacrifices a part of himself.
I really loved Dear Martin by Nic Stone. It was a powerful book that was both timely and important to today’s society – not just for today’s youth, but for everyone. So when I saw this book being called a great read for fans of Nic Stone, I knew I was definitely going to have to read this.
By Any Means Necessary is another one of those powerful and important reads. I honestly love the novels coming out lately that have such important messages behind them, especially ones that focus on race, culture, and sexuality. The messages behind a lot of these novels are the kind that you need to carry with you, day in and day out. By Any Means Necessary is one of those. It’s the kind of book you will want to share with everyone, because it is so good and the characters are so on point.
The cover of By Any Means Necessary is both simple and captivating. The bright yellow color of the cover really captures your attention, that’s for sure. I think it’s interesting that so much of this book revolves around a bee farm – it’s something like I’ve never read before. I thought it was so neat, especially with all the news about bees lately.
My favorite part of this book is the main character, Torrey, and his relationship with Gabriel. Gabriel is the first boy that Torrey kissed, and because of that, they will always share that special connection. Gabriel is who Torrey decides to talk to to help save the bee farm that his uncle left behind after his death, and seeing their ideas while working together is interesting, especially with the chemistry that was left behind between the two.
There’s a lot of stuff going on in this book, but the character development is fantastic. Seriously – I love watching Torrey’s growth from the beginning of the book through to the end of the book. Every choice that he makes, every thing he does, it all shapes who he becomes, and I really loved that. I’m such a huge fan of character development, so this book was the kind of book that I dream about!
If you pick up a contemporary novel that is full of important messages that you should always carry with you in your heart, this is a great one to choose. From the complex relationships between the characters to the amazing plot, this book is just…wow. It’s great. I loved it. It’s definitely one that I will pick up again, and you better believe that I will be on the lookout for more books by this author in the future!
Note: I received an ARC of this book from the publisher in exchange for an honest review. Thank you!
