Ace of Shades
Author: Amanda Foody
Series: The Shadow Game, #1
Publication Date: April 10th, 2018
Publisher: Harlequin Teen
Synopsis: Welcome to the City of Sin, where casino families reign, gangs infest the streets…
and secrets hide in every shadow.
Enne Salta was raised as a proper young lady, and no lady would willingly visit New Reynes, the so-called City of Sin. But when her mother goes missing, Enne must leave her finishing school—and her reputation—behind to follow her mother’s trail to the city where no one survives uncorrupted.
Frightened and alone, her only lead is a name: Levi Glaisyer. Unfortunately, Levi is not the gentleman she expected—he’s a street lord and a con man. Levi is also only one payment away from cleaning up a rapidly unraveling investment scam, so he doesn’t have time to investigate a woman leading a dangerous double life. Enne’s offer of compensation, however, could be the solution to all his problems.
Their search for clues leads them through glamorous casinos, illicit cabarets and into the clutches of a ruthless mafia donna. As Enne unearths an impossible secret about her past, Levi’s enemies catch up to them, ensnaring him in a vicious execution game where the players always lose. To save him, Enne will need to surrender herself to the city…
And she’ll need to play.
I’m probably one of the few people who haven’t read Amanda Foody’s first book, Daughter of the Burning City, but I fell in love with the synopsis for Ace of Shades the second I read it, as well as that stunning deep red cover with the cards on the front.
When I started reading the book, I was drawn into the beautiful settings and the world building that Amanda Foody was able to create – everything in this book felt absolutely stunning and realistic, fun and exciting. There was an incredible amount of detail placed into the book and I feel like there was just so much on offer here. The rich, dark atmosphere that the book brings you into is the perfect setup for the story, which is completely original, fun, and the kind of thing that really makes me fall in love with a book.
The characters were so fleshed out and perfectly written – oh my gosh, I can’t remember the last time I felt so connected to characters like I did with those in Ace of Shades. While I wasn’t sure that I was going to like the main characters, Enne and Levi at first, I found myself drawn to them and hanging on their every move to see what happens next. Not only does the author have an incredible flair for forming a stunning setting for a book, but she really knows how to bring characters to life and make them jump right off the pages. Even the conversations that they had felt real, instead of forced.
The casinos and nightlife in this book really came to life, giving readers a glimpse into this city lifestyle that involves gambling and crime. The story had a touch of suspense that kept me guessing the whole way through – there were parts where I honestly couldn’t predict what was going to happen next, and I loved that this was all so new and exciting.
I absolutely cannot wait for the second book in this amazing new series!
Since finishing this, I’ve actually bought a copy of Daughter of the Burning City, because I know if I loved this one, I’m going to love that one, as well.
Note: I received an eARC of this book from the publisher in exchange for an honest review – Thank you!
