A teen rockstar has to navigate family, love, coming out, and life in the spotlight after being labeled the latest celebrity trainwreck in Jen Wilde’s quirky and utterly relatable novel.
As a rock star drummer in the hit band The Brightsiders, Emmy King’s life should be perfect. But there’s nothing the paparazzi love more than watching a celebrity crash and burn. When a night of partying lands Emmy in hospital and her girlfriend in jail, she’s branded the latest tabloid train wreck.
Luckily, Emmy has her friends and bandmates, including the super-swoonworthy Alfie, to help her pick up the pieces of her life. She knows hooking up with a band member is exactly the kind of trouble she should be avoiding, and yet Emmy and Alfie Just. Keep. Kissing.
Will the inevitable fallout turn her into a clickbait scandal (again)? Or will she find the strength to stand on her own?
Guys, this book was absolutely amazing! It was fun and it had so much awesomeness in terms of characters! If you loved the author’s previous novel, Queens of Geek, this book is the next book you need in your life!
I love the whole theme of this book – I’ve always been drawn to books that feature celebrities or main characters being famous, because they’re always so much fun to read. In this case, I loved Emmy’s character because she was this amazing drummer in her band, The Brightsiders. She has a bit of a breakdown when she and her girlfriend get arrested at a party, and the tabloids are all over it.
Her friends really help her pick up the pieces of her life and put herself back together again (friendship is a huge part of this book, and it’s fantastic – I love books with friendship as a main theme!), and eventually she finds herself falling for a special someone.
The whole fame/celebrity angle of The Brightsiders makes it so much fun to read and full of excitement. There really wasn’t a single dull moment in this book and I flew right through it because it was so much fun.
Emmy’s character is so well written that you can’t help loving her from the first page. She’s everything you want her to be, and while she struggles for a bit, she manages to put her life back together. It was interesting to see her character develop from the first page to the last.
I definitely recommend this book for a great summer read if you’re looking for one. There’ so much going on in this book and it’s never dull – it’s such a fun read!
Note: I received an eARC of this book from the publisher via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. Thank you!
