The Final Six
Author: Alexandra Monir
Publication Date: March 6th, 2018
Synopsis: When Leo, an Italian championship swimmer, and Naomi, a science genius from California, are two of the twenty-four teens drafted into the International Space Training Camp, their lives are forever altered. After erratic climate change has made Earth a dangerous place to live, the fate of the population rests on the shoulders of the final six who will be scouting a new planet. Intense training, global scrutiny, and cutthroat opponents are only a few of the hurdles the contestants must endure in this competition.
For Leo, the prospect of traveling to Europa—Jupiter’s moon—to help resettle humankind is just the sense of purpose he’s been yearning for since losing his entire family in the flooding of Rome. Naomi, after learning of a similar space mission that mysteriously failed, suspects the ISTC isn’t being up front with them about what’s at risk.
As the race to the final six advances, the tests get more challenging—even deadly. With pressure mounting, Naomi finds an unexpected friend in Leo, and the two grow closer with each mind-boggling experience they encounter. But it’s only when the finalists become fewer and their destinies grow nearer that the two can fathom the full weight of everything at stake: the world, the stars, and their lives.
“A breathtakingly real look at love, loss, and the dangers of space, THE FINAL SIX skyrockets into twists and turns I never saw coming!” ―Beth Revis, New York Times bestselling author of Across the Universe series
“I sat down to read a bit before bed and then it was two a.m. and the book was half gone. This is a space competition of epic proportions, loaded with disturbing hidden secrets and intense action. Your eyes will be glued to the page.” ―Kendare Blake, #1 NYT bestselling author of Three Dark Crowns
“Compelling, cinematic, and fascinating. I can’t wait to read what happens next in the mission to Europa!” ―Romina Russell, New York Times bestselling author of the Zodiac series
The Final Six was such a fast paced and fun science fiction adventure that I had a lot of trouble putting it down to do other things, and I honestly just wanted to keep reading. I loved the plot, especially the dystopian theme that it had going on. Did I mention that I’m loving all of the new dystopian novels that I’ve been picking up this year? They’re fun and a breath of fresh air to the genre. The Final Six is another one that is great at mixing both dystopian and science fiction to create something new, fun, and a great read (with a beautiful cover!).
The starry theme of the cover is one of the things that originally drew me into this book, not to mention the synopsis, which, lets face it, sounds completely amazing (and it is, too). It’s original and it’s the kind of book that practically screams “Read me!” especially if you love science fiction.
The Final Six is well written and really kept my attention, having me turning pages well into the night. I couldn’t get enough of the beautifully detailed settings and how well the interactions between characters were written, breathing life into the book and them.
As for the characters, wow. I loved the main characters – they each had their own individual personality that really made them stand apart from each other, and they were deep and well rounded characters that made the story even more interesting. The supporting characters were written well, too, but the main characters were some of the best that I’ve read in a book in the genre in a long time.
I haven’t read any of the author’s other novels, but after reading The Final Six, I definitely will be going back and checking those out too, because she is such a talented writer!
If you’re looking for a little something different, or if you want to get back into dystopians or are a huge science fiction lover, The Final Six isn’t a book that should be missed. You need to pick this one up now, because you won’t be disappointed!
Note: I received a copy of this book from the publisher in exchange for an honest review. Thank you!
