Author: Zachary Auburn

Publication Date: October 4th, 2016

Publisher: Three Rivers Press

Synopsis: Based on three ’zines that have collectively sold 35,000 copies, a parody guidebook for people to teach their cats about gun safety, abstinence, evolution, and other important right-wing concerns, which crosses the whimsy of Cat Fancy with the paranoia of a Chick Tract.

The cats of America are under siege, faced with greater dangers than we have ever known. Long gone are the good old days when a cat’s biggest worries were mean dogs or a bath. Today’s cats must contend with liberals, international bankers, Satanists, cybercriminals, and countless other threats to their nine lives. Never before has there been a single book to help prepare your cat for the evils of the modern world…until now.

Whether concerned about the proper use of firearms, the dangers of premarital intercourse, or survival in a post-apocalyptic wasteland, the American Association of Patriots has created a guidebook to prepare cat owners for difficult conversations they dread having to have with their cats. Written in a simple, Q&A format, it answers such burning questions as, “What age is right to talk to my cat about gun safety?” and “What are the benefits of my cat living a lifestyle of abstinence?” and covers the following subjects: abstinence, evolution, online safety, post-apocalyptic survival, puberty, and satanism.

Parodying the outrageous language and ideas espoused by conspiracy-minded, right-wing extremist organizations mixed in with a generous dose of silly cat humor, How to Talk to Your Cat About Gun Safety is a hilarious PSA for cat lovers, political junkies with a sense of humor, and anyone who likes a good laugh.

My Review

This is one of those books that is written to make you laugh, and kind of poke fun at the ridiculous views that some have over important issues, such as gun safety, abstinence, creationism, etc.  Quite the liberal myself, I kind of wondered if I might find this plain absurd, but it really made me laugh on quite a few occasions.

The book itself offers several different “pamphlets”, including topics I mentioned earlier as well as a few others, and they are aimed toward speaking to your feline friend about all of these issues.  Armed with laugh out loud funny advice and, of course, beliefs of your ridiculous right wing extremists, this book offers a hilarious and quite enjoyable reading experience.  The pictures of the cats in various “taboo” acts really adds to the book and makes it even more fun to read.

I have to say that I could pretty much see a lot of people getting offended by this book, so I would only read it if you are open minded or have a little bit of common sense floating around in your noggin…it’s meant to be a parody, not a serious book.

Just remember…keep your kitties safe and be sure you talk to them about important issues!

Note: I received a copy of this book from the Blogging for Books program in exchange for an honest review.
