Synopsis

Even dragons can’t resist a good story…

Even though Leo would rather sit at home and read, his parents send him out into the world in the hopes that Leo will become a famous knight. But when Leo comes up against the land’s most fearsome beasts, he soon discovers that scary monsters enjoy a good book as much as anyone…

My Review

The Storybook Knight is an adorable book that teaches the importance of reading instead of resorting to violence to solve problems.

The Storybook Knight tells the story of Leo, a mouse, who would much rather stay at home and read as opposed to setting off on quests to become a knight like others in his village.  His parents constantly try to nag him into giving up his books and setting off to help others, solve problems, or fight, but Leo has no interest – he would much rather just be left on his own to read.

One day, Leo decides to take his parents offer of going off to tame a dragon that has an entire village terrified, because it means that he will be able to come home and read.  On his way, he encounters several scary creatures, such as a troll, and to each one he reads a story about them instead of fighting them.  By offering each character the gift of a story, he opens up the means of friendship between them.  So Leo continues to do this for everyone he encounters, including the dragon.  Can Leo make a friend of the dragon, as well, ans save the village so he can return home to read?

The Storybook Knight is told in rhyming verse, so it’s a great story for even the youngest children.  The pictures are charming and cute, and it’s fun to follow along on Leo’s adventures as he tries to save the day with the amazing powers of a great story.  It teaches children that violence isn’t the answer, but instead by sharing knowledge with those around you, you have the ability to gain friendship.

My two daughters enjoyed this story quite a bit (as did I!), and I really found it to be a such a lovely little book.  That cover is simply gorgeous, and the artwork in the book tells a story on its own without even needing the words, so as I said earlier, even the youngest readers can follow along as you read.

Definitely don’t miss this one if you like picture books…readers of all ages will delight in this mysterious hero who loves to share stories with everyone he meets!
